Kilimanjaro Tipping
Tipping Guidelines on Mount Kilimanjaro
At Moshi Treks, we are dedicated to maintaining ethical and fair practices in every aspect of our operations, particularly regarding the well-being and fair compensation of our guides and porters. We follow the guidelines set by the Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project (KPAP) to ensure that our team members are treated with respect and receive appropriate compensation for their hard work.
Recommended Tipping Amounts
Tipping is a key component of the compensation for the dedicated crew members who support your Kilimanjaro climb. KPAP provides recommended tipping amounts for various roles, which we fully endorse and implement. These amounts are based on the total number of climbers in your group, not per individual climber:
- Lead Guide: $20 per day
- Assistant Guide: $15 per day
- Porters: $8 per day (per porter)
- Cook: $15 per day
You will receive information about the total crew size in your final briefing pack, allowing you to prepare the appropriate tips accordingly.
Example Tipping for a Typical Trek
To help you understand the tipping structure, let’s consider a typical seven-day climb for two people. The typical crew for such a trek would include:
- 1 Lead Guide
- 1 Assistant Guide
- 1 Cook
- 6 to 7 Porters
Based on these roles, the tipping breakdown for the entire trek would be:
- Lead Guide: $140 (7 days x $20)
- Assistant Guide: $105 (7 days x $15)
- Cook: $105 (7 days x $15)
- Porters: $392 to $456 (7 days x $8 x 7 to 8 porters)
If your trek includes additional days or extra services, such as a private toilet porter, the number of porters will increase accordingly to carry extra supplies and equipment, which may affect the total tipping amount.
When and How to Tip
We recommend presenting the tips to the head guide on the morning of the last day of your climb. This ensures that the distribution is organized and fair. The head guide will then allocate the tips among the crew members according to our policy.
Our tipping policy is designed to ensure transparency and fairness, reflecting our commitment to the welfare of our team. Your contributions play a significant role in supporting the lives of our crew, acknowledging their dedication and hard work.
Summary
Tipping is an important way to show appreciation and support for the crew who make your Kilimanjaro adventure possible. By adhering to the KPAP guidelines and our structured tipping process, you help ensure that these dedicated individuals are fairly compensated for their exceptional service. With Moshi Treks, you can be confident that your contributions are handled ethically and with the utmost respect for our team.
