Enjoy the Adventure
The West Kilimanjaro plains, located in northern Tanzania, encompass Maasai community lands and Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs). This region, characterized by acacia woodlands and expansive plains, offers breathtaking views of Mt. Kilimanjaro and supports a diverse range of wildlife. Common sightings include wildebeest, zebras, gazelles, impalas, giraffes, and baboons. During certain times of the year, you might also see elephants, as the area forms part of an elephant corridor linking Kenya’s Amboseli National Park with Mt. Kilimanjaro.
Home to the nomadic Maasai herdsmen, who live in harmony with the surrounding wildlife, this area is often referred to as “Maasai Land.” The rich Maasai culture, combined with the stunning wildlife and landscapes, makes this region perfect for a unique off-the-beaten-path adventure. Ideal for discerning travelers, the cycling tour here offers opportunities for walking, photography, and cultural immersion amidst spectacular scenery.

From there, you’ll cycle through Ngare Nairobi village and along the border of the Ndarakwai Conservancy, making your way toward the West Kilimanjaro airstrip. Continuing on the main dirt road, you’ll pass TingaTinga village before reaching your destination at the Olpopongi Maasai Village.
Upon arrival at Olpopongi Maasai Village, you’ll be greeted with a traditional Maasai dance. After lunch and settling into your Maasai-hut style accommodations, you’ll have the opportunity to immerse yourself in Maasai culture with a guided tour. Conclude your day with a delightful dinner around the bonfire.

Today, we’ll start our cycling journey early in the morning, heading south towards Ngabobo Village. An early departure will help us cover significant distance before the sun intensifies. The day’s route offers a fascinating contrast to the lush, green slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro, as we navigate through dry, arid grasslands. In the morning, keep an eye out for wildlife such as wildebeest, giraffes, zebras, and possibly elephants.
Although the route is shorter, it presents a bit more of a challenge due to the terrain and weather. The final stretch involves a gradual ascent on a gravel road as we cycle through Ngabobo Village towards the lodge. We’ll spend the night at Osiligilai Maasai Lodge.
- Accommodation: Osiligilai Maasai Lodge
- Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Today’s route takes us from the arid zone into the lush, verdant slopes of Mt. Meru. We’ll enjoy a gentle ascent along gravel roads as we head towards Momella in Arusha National Park. Cycling through streams cascading down the slopes of Mt. Meru, we’ll make our way to Ngare Nanyuki, a vibrant small village, before entering the park.
As we approach the park entrance, we may be fortunate enough to spot several giraffes along the way. Once we reach the park, we’ll quickly complete the necessary paperwork and embark on a short game drive around the park’s Momella Lakes. Following the drive, we’ll return to the main gate, collect our bikes, and cycle towards Ngongongare Gate, marking the end of today’s ride on the edge of Arusha National Park.
After a brief rest at the gate, you’ll be transferred back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.
