Marangu town nestles on the fertile slopes of majestic Mount Kilimanjaro, and it’s brimming with tradition. You’ll explore the culture and terrifying history of the Chagga Tribe (they built those caves for a reason) and you’ll take a short but delightful hike in the lush green landscape to a sparkling waterfall but, don’t worry, you won’t run out of energy because you’ll visit a coffee plantation and have the chance to roast and make your own coffee. The buzz you’ll get from our packed-so-full-it-hurts Marangu day trip won’t just be the caffeine.

Itinerary
We have carefully planned out each day to give you the best possible experience. From exploring historic landmarks to tasting delicious local cuisine, each day is packed with adventure and excitement. Join us as we take you on a journey through some of the most fascinating destinations in the world.
We’ll start our day early, heading out from Moshi with the rising sun on our right and skirting the foothills of Kilimanjaro. Our first stop is the Marangu Gate at 1,900 meters, the starting point for climbers tackling Kilimanjaro’s Marangu route. Here, you’ll experience the calm of the montane forest mixed with the excitement of climbers preparing for their ascent. You might feel inspired to join them, but don’t worry—we’ll guide you back to the van!
Next, follow the delightful aroma to Marangu, known for its coffee. We’ll visit a small coffee farm where you’ll see how coffee beans are grown, harvested, and roasted. You’ll even get a chance to roast and brew your own cup of fresh coffee.
Feeling hungry after all this culture? We’ll head to a local restaurant for a tasty traditional Chagga lunch, with options for vegetarians.
After lunch, enjoy a refreshing 30-minute hike to the Ndoro Waterfalls. The trail takes you through lush forest and a steep descent to the waterfall. Take in the beautiful views and cool off with a swim in the pool beneath the falls.
Next, we’ll explore the Chagga Underground Caves, built as a refuge from historical conflicts with the Maasai. We’ll spend some time at the Chagga Live Museum, learning about traditional Chagga life, complete with wandering goats for added authenticity.
To finish the day, we’ll treat you to a glass of local banana beer or banana wine—this is banana country, after all!
On the way back to Moshi, relax and enjoy the scenic drive through villages and foothills. Feel free to take a nap—after such a full day, you’ve earned it!
