When planning your climb of Mount Kilimanjaro, it’s important to know that there are seven well-established routes to choose from. The best route for you depends on your experience, fitness level, and the kind of views you want to enjoy. For beginners, the Marangu route is ideal as it’s the easiest and typically takes just five days. On the other hand, if you’re seeking adventure and breathtaking scenery, the Machame route is perfect, offering some of the most stunning vistas on the mountain.
Mount Kilimanjaro offers seven established climbing routes: Marangu, Machame, Lemosho, Shira, Rongai, Northern Circuit, and Umbwe. The Marangu, Machame, and Umbwe routes all start from the southern side of the mountain, with Mweka used exclusively for descent. The Lemosho, Shira, and Northern Circuit routes approach from the west, while the Rongai route begins from the north. To help visualize these options, we’ve included illustrations showing a three-dimensional view of Kilimanjaro’s routes and detailed close-ups of the approaches to the summit.
Choosing the best route for your Kilimanjaro climb can be challenging, as you need to consider factors such as the route’s scenery, difficulty level, traffic on the mountain, and altitude acclimatization points. This guide is designed to help you select the most suitable route based on these considerations, ensuring you have the best possible experience on your climb.
The Machame Route, often referred to as the “Whiskey Route,” is renowned for its stunning scenic landscapes, making it one of the most popular paths on Mount Kilimanjaro. However, this route is also known for its steep inclines and demanding terrain, which can make the trek quite challenging.
Ideal for adventurous individuals or those with prior experience in hiking, backpacking, or high-altitude trekking, the Machame Route requires a good level of physical fitness. If you’re determined to take on this route, ensure you’re adequately prepared for the demanding conditions.
Pros of the Machame ‘Whiskey’ Route:
Cons of the Machame Route:
The Marangu Route, often called the “Coca Cola” route, is the oldest and most established path on Mount Kilimanjaro. Many trekkers choose this route because it is the most straightforward, with a gradual slope that makes the climb relatively easier.
This route stands out as the only one offering dormitory-style sleeping huts, which can make the trek more comfortable. The climb typically takes five days to complete.
However, the Marangu Route has a lower success rate due to its shorter duration, which doesn’t allow for as much time to acclimatize to the high altitude. The route’s brief time frame and the fact that it follows the same path up and down can make acclimatization more challenging. Additionally, it is less scenic compared to other routes.
Pros of the Marangu Route:
Cons of the Marangu Route:
The Lemosho Route offers one of the most breathtaking trekking experiences on Mount Kilimanjaro. As a relatively new route, it is highly recommended for its stunning scenery, high success rates, and lower crowds. It begins from the west, starting at Arusha and proceeding to the Londorossi Gate.
The trek begins with a two-day hike through the lush rainforest to the Shira Ridge, then traverses the Shira Plateau from west to east. This route generally encounters fewer crowds until it intersects with the Machame trail near the Lava Tower. Following this, the route continues along the Southern Circuit beneath Kilimanjaro’s Southern Ice Field before descending via the Mweka Route.
Pros of the Lemosho Route:
Cons of the Lemosho Route:
The Rongai Route is unique as it is the only path on Kilimanjaro approaching from the north, near the Kenyan border. Although it is gaining popularity, it remains relatively uncrowded. This route is characterized by its gradual slope, making it a good alternative to the more popular Marangu Route and a preferable choice for those seeking a more remote experience or climbing during the rainy season, as the northern side receives less precipitation. The Rongai Route is moderately challenging and is highly recommended for trekkers with less backpacking experience.
While the scenery on Rongai is less varied compared to the western routes, it compensates with a journey through pristine wilderness areas almost throughout the trek. The descent is made via the Marangu Route.
Pros of the Rongai Route:
Cons of the Rongai Route:
The Umbwe Route is considered the most challenging path on Mount Kilimanjaro due to its rapid ascent to high altitudes, which does not allow for adequate acclimatization. Although the trail sees relatively low traffic, its demanding nature means that the success rate for reaching the summit is also lower. This route is best suited for experienced climbers who can acclimatize quickly to the high altitude.
Pros of the Umbwe Route:
Cons of the Umbwe Route:
The Northern Circuit Route is regarded as one of the best paths on Mount Kilimanjaro, offering nearly 360 degrees of stunning scenery, including the tranquil and less-visited northern slopes. As the longest route on Kilimanjaro, it provides ample time for acclimatization, resulting in the highest summit success rate. This makes the Northern Circuit highly recommended for climbers seeking a comprehensive and rewarding experience.
The route begins with a drive from Moshi to the Londorossi Gate. Over the first two days, trekkers pass through lush rainforest to reach the Shira Ridge, and then traverse the Shira Plateau. The journey continues north, circling clockwise from Moir Hut to Buffalo Camp to School Hut, before summiting from the east. The descent is made via the Mweka Route.
Pros of the Northern Circuit Route:
Cons of the Northern Circuit Route:
Our top pick for a Kilimanjaro climb, balancing scenery, difficulty, and traffic, is a combination of the Lemosho and Machame routes. The Lemosho route typically takes about 8 days, while the Machame route takes around 7 days. Together, these routes provide some of the most stunning views of the mountain, offer excellent acclimatization opportunities, and have relatively low traffic compared to other paths. Martin O2024-07-17Amazing Safari with a Great Company We had been dreaming of an African Safari for 30 years and we finally decided to do one this year. There are hundreds of safari companies in Kenya and Tanzania but after narrowing it down to 3 we selected RajaTours based on previous reviews, price, and itinerary. We were very pleased with our choice. On the front end (booking), Rajab was very responsive and answered all our questions and handled our requests/modifications quickly and effectively. During the safari our team of drivers, Geoffrey, Allen, and Stephen were great. Allen somehow kept spotting animals miles away or hiding in trees or tall brush as we were moving at 30-50kmph no less! We had a change in accommodations at the last minute due to a flood that washed away our camp (prior to our arrival) but were re-located to a very nice lodge instead. Though, it would have been nice to know in advance the change of accommodation. Lastly, we felt we had great value for money. We lived our dream safari at an affordable price and will forever cherish the memories we made.Verified
Virgil Chung2024-05-02Excellent experience, Very professional team of Kilimanjaro hiking First of all, I must to say the team is very professional (Guides, chef, waiter, and porters). I took 5 days Marangu hike and submitted Uhuru Peak successfully. Everything was well arranged and felt great. Our guides Jackson and Valency are very professional. They care about my health conditions and checked Oxygen saturation/heart rate/feeling every day to insure my safety. Every equipment which they have recommended me to carry were very useful. They did their best to help me to submit Uhuru and avoid mountain sickness. Told me what kind of speed should hike, which equipment should use at different situation, and how much foo/water should have on the mountain. I had great time and also learn a lots from our guides. The service was very good. Our waiter not only deliver food/water to us but also tried his best to help us feel comfortable in huts. The food was delicious for being on a "5895m" mountain. Of course, coffee, tea, and fruits every day 🙂 Also, the prices is affordable, especially since I'm just a backpacker. Thanks a for RajaTour and every team member. Without you, I can’t stand on the top of the roof of Africa. Highly recommend!!!Verified
Kojak20162024-03-12Extremely professional and great value for money Drop down menu error: our safari was actually 4 days in Serengeti and Ngorongoro Gettin the variety of camps and lodges, to the multitude of animals seen, very very worthwhile trip. Gettin the point of arriving at the airport until we were dropped back at the airport. Great value for money and our driver and guide, Alen, was always on top of everything. He also was so good at spotting animals at an incredible distance. We stopped for lunch everyday somewhere en route and those lunches were the best meal. I can't speak for other operators but Rajatiurs definitely deliveredVerified
Małgorzata K2024-03-03The best Safari trip Our safari was very well organized and we could watch the Migration, big five (I’ve lost count of lions, there were so many of them!) and lots of other animals&birds. I’ve seen all I dreamed of and many more! Alen, our guide is the best at spotting animals and a great driver too. Highly recommendVerified
Marzena K2024-02-27Magical safari with RajaTours. We have just completed an 11-day safari with RajaTours. It was a fantastic time. We saw lots of animals. Lions and cheetahs were difficult to count. The Great Migration in Ndutu and the Serengeti is an amazing experience. The Ngorongoro crater with rhinos (we saw 2), herds of flamingos and elephants, zebras, hippos is another magical place that our guide Alen showed us. Alen not only knew where to look for animals but also told us a lot. We are very pleased with both the contacts with RajaTours during the preparation of the safari and the course of the entire trip. We went on safari with RajaTours for the second time. The first time our guide was Fred. Both guides are not only excellent guides, but also great drivers and very nice people. Thank you RajaTours for a perfectly organized safari and a fantastic time in Tanzania. Marzena, Robert, Ata, BogdanVerified
Zoe Z2024-02-21Great trip, the guide and the vehicle were professional. The trip to Kenya and Tanzania lasted 13 days in total, but 10 days was enough. Raja also suggested reducing the number of days, but the flight could not be adjusted. Overall, it was a wonderful trip. We took many group photos of BigFive and UglyFive. The two guides and Raja kept communicating, so we could leave the trip to them with confidence. In addition, Kenya is more economically developed than Tanzania, so it is relatively more convenient to travel in Kenya, including the Internet and the distance. The cultural landscape of Tanzania is more vivid and interesting. It is recommended to buy souvenirs in Tanzania for those who will go to both countries. They are more distinctive and the price is more suitable.Verified
Gayle M2024-02-15Best guide possible Our tour guide, Nora was outstanding! She was attentive to our physical needs, great at spotting wildlife, very knowledgeable about the birds of eastern Africa. She promoted sustainable tourism, respect for the animals and environment. We learned that there are only 10 female guides in Tanzania, out of more than 2000. Nora and the other women guides are working to empower women to become professional guides. She is a free lance guide so you can request her even if you go with another company Raja Tours was flexible in designing the trip we wanted and then in changing it when our health required a hospital visit and adding a day off to test.Verified
Yanick O2024-02-12Best experience with very good guides and a lot of great memories! We had the pleasure to have a Safari with Raja, starting and ending in Nairobi, following several national parks in Kenya and Tanzania. Both of our guides (Jeff & Alan) were very kind and patient with a lot of specific knowledge and very safe driving skills. All the lodges we visited were on a very high standard and we enjoyed any of the stays. The mixture of lodges and tented camps was perfect any we do not have any complaints about this. To our Safari-experience, we were extremely lucky to see all the big five within the days in a very rare condition, for example some cubs or hunting lions - just breathtaking! Thanks to the big experience and knowledge of the two guides, we had some very special encounters. Specially to talk about Lake Ndutu, which is not on every list for Safaris but very worth to make a stop between Serengeti and Ngorongoro NP. Last but not least as well big thanks to Rajab from RajaTours, very easy to organize the safari, very good price for an unforgetable trip in Kenya and Tanzania. Thanks a lot!Verified
Yah N2024-02-07Highly recommended tour We went on a 5-day safari in Ngorongoro, Serengeti, and Masai Mara. The part in Tanzania with our guide Alen was incredible. We enjoyed excellent accommodation and food. Alen knew all the best spots in the national parks. We ran into a small issue in Masai Mara, but Rajatour quickly fixed it. Overall, we highly recommend this tour. We had a great time for Safari here!Verified
Sibylla W2024-01-21Safari in Nyerere Nationalpark We had a wonderful safari trip with our guide Ludovico, who told us a lot about wildlife in the park and gave anything to show us most possible animals. We were lucky to see a lot of them. Highlights? We were very close to an elephant family, and we were impressed about the vultures attacking the killed giraffe.... Only the lion was hiding- he was probaly somewhere digesting the giraffe meat from the previous day 😉
